There was no shortage of excitement at Denison Park on Thursday as the Mendi Blackhawks touched down in Bowen for a special community meet-and-greet, drawing footy fans young and old to the newly upgraded facilities.
The visit was headlined by special guest James Tamou, a former North Queensland Cowboys and NRL representative who inspired a generation of Queenslanders with his powerhouse performances in the front row. His presence had local kids starstruck, as he shared stories, posed for photos, and signed gear for dozens of young Seagulls juniors.
Hosted in partnership with Bowen Seagulls Rugby League Club, the event was more than just a photo op - it was a chance to celebrate the grassroots game and foster direct connections between elite players and aspiring juniors.
“To have someone like James here, talking one-on-one with the kids, is massive for a town like Bowen, it shows these kids that their dreams aren’t out of reach.”
The Blackhawks squad took time to engage with local players, answer questions, and even get involved in light ball drills with the juniors. Parents and club volunteers praised the open, family-friendly atmosphere.
Held on the freshly revitalised grounds of Denison Park — which recently saw a $1.6 million upgrade - the visit also gave Council representatives a chance to see firsthand how community investment in sport is paying dividends.
“We’re not just building facilities; we’re building pathways, this is exactly the kind of moment that shows how sport can unite and uplift regional communities.”
With laughter on the sidelines and muddy boots on the paddock, it was a day Bowen kids won’t soon forget - and a reminder that the heart of rugby league still beats strongest in the regions.
